Nándor Wagner: Garden of Philosophers (Budapest-Mashiko/Nakano-ku, Tokyo, Japan)

Nándor Wagner, a sculptor born in Nagyvárad and died in Japan (1922-1997), created two compositions in parallel. (Actually three, but the third composition created for New York has not yet been staged.)

On October 18, 2001, the Philosophical Garden was erected for the first time in Hungary, with the inscription "For a better understanding of each other" on its pedestal.

According to its creator, the spiritual message of the founders and delegates of world religions is not the difference between these religions, but what unites them. That's why it came to the heart of Europe, to Central Europe: "We are the connecting point between East and West." The work from Budapest has eight figures.

On December 4, 2009, in the Philosophical Park (Testugakudo) in the Nakano district of Tokyo, on the 140th anniversary of the establishment of Hungarian-Japanese diplomatic relations and the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment, the artist's other sculptural group, now with 11 figures, called the Philosophical Garden, was inaugurated.

Let's say a few words about the composition of the sculpture group. The artist placed the five selected figures - Abraham, Akhenaten, Jesus, Buddha and Lao-tzu - on a circular ring in such a way that the attention of each of them is concentrated on the common point - on the bright sphere in the center of the circle. Next to the circle, in the outer space, on the side of an equilateral triangle connected to the circle, he placed the figures of the three historical figures - Mahatma Gandhi, Bodhidharma (Prince Daruma) and Saint Francis of Assisi - who lived their lives dedicated to the pure principles formulated by those standing in the circle .

And in the other three figures erected in Tokyo, he modeled and immortalized the great figures of the law, Hammurapi, Justinian and Prince Shotoku, the statue of the creator of the first Japanese constitution. They were placed "on the other side of the circle".

The photos show groups of sculptures in Budapest and Japan. The Garden of Philosophers on Gellerhegy is located in the 1-4. photos, the Japanese one can be seen first in Mashiko, in the garden of sculptor Nándor Wagner's art gallery (5-6), before the Tokyo installation, and in the Philosophy Park in the Nakano district of Tokyo (Testugakudo, 7-8).
